Polygraph examinations are used to verify truth and determine deception, to identify the innocent and to help identify the guilty. Polygraphs are commonly used in civil and criminal matters, federal and local law enforcement and armored transport pre-employment screening, commercial theft investigations and to monitor convicted sex offenders being supervised on probation or parole, and while under treatment. Private individuals also seek polygraph examinations to help resolve personal matters.
These are just some areas in which the use of the polygraph has been proven valuable.
NOTE: For suspected employee thefts, see the requirements of the Employee Polygraph Protection Act (EPPA) of 1988.
